Israel to America

Yesterday in our church the sermon was a little different. It was one of the week when our pastor took a break from exegesis. Instead we had only one verse but a powerful message. The sermon was about the current state of our nation. Truthfully it reminded me of a lot of things I have said here.
2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
These were God's words to Israel, but they should apply to us today. Our country has many problems that could be solved by following God. But it seems most of this nation claims to be Christian, but lives a secular life. Our pastor also included a few quotes from patriots:
"Let men be good and government can not be bad. Let men be evil and government can not be good." -William Penn
"It is important to keep God fearing people in office." - John Jay, first Supreme Court Justice
"America is great because America is good. If ever America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great." - Alexis de Toqueville
Those statements seem like daggers considering the current state of American politics. The answers must come from the public. That is how our country was set up to run. Government for the people, by the people. It worked this way in Biblical times as well. Everyone knows the story of Jonah and the whale, but Jonah brought repentance to Nineveh.
Jonah 3:4 On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned."
Jonah 3:10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.
That was his sermon to turn the city from it's sinful ways. Pretty much he said In forty days, DOOM! Repent! And they repented. Well all we are missing now is a man fresh from a whale's stomach. Look around you, listen to the media. We need to spread the message: Judgement is coming! Repent and trust!
Hebrews 9:27-28 27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.
